Again I’m torn,
between slumber and awakening
The rooster’s crow,
like a nagging child
pesters again and again.
Maybe he’ll be famous
Even if just for his music
Maybe he won’t.
But he’ll be back
to sing perpetually
into our tired ears:
Coo-coo-roo-coo
He’ll keep his duty,
till there’s a coup
and he is cooked
Or his time is over
and he has to report.
Like him, I’ll rise daily
faithful and consistent
Maybe today, I’ll be famous
Maybe I won’t
I’ll rise still
I’ll stretch, break open
And be poured out
Later, I’ll lay musing
Maybe tomorrow, I’ll be famous
Maybe I won’t
But my best for all
And in all, will be
Perhaps I’ll be famous someday
Maybe I won’t
I’ll still be great
And the heavens;
Lo, the earth will attest
Because I gave my all.
